VCHS is very proud of our students who graduated this evening from Leadership Vance. This exceptional program gives high school students the opportunity to learn about our community, network with other high school students in our area, and enhance their leadership skills. A very special thank you to everyone that had a part in making this program such a wonderful experience for our students !

Spring Break is almost here!

Check out our scientist!! Our AP Environmental Students in action!
Students investigated ground-level (tropospheric) ozone using Schoenbein reactive paper, a simple but effective air quality indicator developed by Christian Friedrich Schoenbein. The paper, treated with potassium iodide and starch, reacts with ozone in the air through oxidation. As ozone interacts with the paper, iodine is produced, which then reacts with starch to create a blue to purple color. The intensity of this color indicates the relative concentration of ozone present. By placing the paper outdoors, students are able to collect real-world data on air pollution and better understand how atmospheric chemistry can be used to monitor environmental conditions.
