Chess Club News
Beginning on January 7, 2010, our chess club will meet in the middle school cafe area on Thursdays from 3:00-3:45 P.M. as a result of our increased club membership, which is now 48! Any parents interested in earning some voluteer time by helping out are asked to contact Mr. Ray Hight at the Thursday chess club session.
Forty-six students from area schools participated in Raleigh Chess Academy's tournament on Sunday, January 10, 2010. For Vance Charter, Lawrence Bacudio finished in a three way tie for first place in section two, while Joseph Sharpe also finished in a three way tie for first place in section three. They both lost out on tie break blitz games.
In the not rated section, Luke Wheeless took first place with a perfect score of 4 wins and no loses and received a trophy. In the same section, Clayton Harris finished second and recieved a medal.
Others from Vance Charter School were Will Harris and Hunter Brummitt.
On February 27th & 28th the Vance Charter Chess Team won 3rd place in the state competition for K-8 Under 1000 section. Out team consists of Lawrence Bacudio, Clayton Harris, Joseph Sharpe, Kevin Treacy, and Luke Wheeless.
Also, individual recogntion goes to Lawrence Bacudio and Joseph Sharpe who both finished in a 6-way tie for 15th place out of a field of 74 players.
On April 18th, our fifth grade Chess Tea participated in a k-5 Team tournament in Raleigh. The event was sponsored by the Raleigh Chess Academy,rated by the US Chess Federation, and hosted by the Montessori School of Raleigh. Our team finished in a tie for second place in a field of ten area scholastic teams. The following students participated:
Brooks Falkner, Leowell Bacudio, Blaise Gruchacz, John Wheeless, and Jackson Grissom
The next competition for the Chess Team will be held on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at Dabney Elementary School. Vance Charter School will be represented by the following students: Brooks Falkner, Leowell Bacudio, Jackson Grisssom, Blaise Gruchacz, and Connor Pendergrass. There will be a few other students attending.
